1/ Artists with big dreams.
2 years...
It took me 2 years to reach my first 1000 followers.
But in 2022, I finally cracked the code. And since then, I've gained over 300k supporters for my art, I became a full-time artist and achieved my biggest dream: traveling the world.
For this life, I worked hard. Way too hard. It shouldn't have been so impossible to overcome.
That’s why I decided to share what I've learned.
So that small artists with big dreams like me can achieve their freedom.
Of course, you'll have to work very hard too.
But at least, you won't be alone, and you'll be able to take my shortcuts.
That's the purpose of The Growth Missive.
Welcome to your new life.
And to kickstart this project, I wanted to pass on the first lesson I learned as a growth artist.
This is edition #01 of the Growth Missive, where I share with you the ONE superpower you need to start with.
2/ The turning point.
As I mentioned earlier, it was in 2022 that my community really took off. Between February 2022 and February 2023, I experienced my first growth and gained over 100k followers. (Even I couldn't believe it.)
Now, can you guess what the turning point was?
Did I rent an art studio?
Did I buy a €3000 camera?
Did I master the art of creating extraordinary videos?
Did I trade in my little sketchbook for huge canvases?
None of the above...
To be completely honest, I fell into those traps, but none of them worked.
And what truly made all the difference might surprise you:
It was going back to simplicity.
3/ My cheap setup.
At the beginning of 2022, my mind was all over the place and I didn’t know how I could grow an art community, or even improve as an artist.
At that time, I was still a law student in Paris. I was also managing the business I had created to pay for my studies. At that time, I was severely lacking in both time and space.
Let me tell you, my reality forced me to keep things simple.
So, for 2 years, this was my setup:
With such a poor setup, many artists might have abandoned the idea of growing their art community. So, why did it succeed for me?
The difference is that I refused to wait for everything to be perfect to start.
Simplicity? That I could manage. Thus, I concentrated on it and pinpointed the essential elements I required to advance in drawing and document my progress:
My phone camera
A sketchbook
Pencils
Natural light.
That's all it took.
Not only to gain 100,000 followers.
But also to make remarkable progress in drawing:
4/ The true power.
Let's face reality: just like the little student Léa, not everyone has unlimited means, time, or space.
That's why I want you to cultivate the superpower of simplicity.
Leonardo da Vinci said that "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."
Because in reality, simplicity allows you to ignore the futile and focus on what truly makes an impact.
To progress in art and build a community, here are the rules of simplicity I've gathered so far:
Keep your materials simple: If you can create great things with a pencil and a lousy camera, imagine what you can do with top-notch equipment?
Keep your content simple: Avoid complex editing or concepts in your art content. Focus on minimalist transitions, editing, and messaging.
Keep your goals simple: Multitasking is a myth! Focus on one artistic goal and one growth goal at a time.
5/ Conclusion.
You'll see as you read my missives, simplicity is my obsession (no wonder I'm talking about it in the very first Growth Missive!)
As artists, we often juggle multiple aspects of life. From family and work to art and content creation... It's easy to feel overwhelmed.
So my message for you today is this one:
Don't forget that you can simplify everything to make it achievable.
All you need to do is start cultivating this power right now...
That's all from me,
See you next week.
Léa.
6/ ✨Growth gems ✨ of the week.
In this section, I'll be sharing updates or reflections on the internet world for artists every week.
Here are this week's topics:
Instagram news // Keeping art real: the fight against AI creations At the beginning of the month, Meta revealed plans to identify and tag AI-generated images on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to combat fake news and misinformation. This is also significant news for artists! It's a step toward addressing accounts that use AI to imitate genuine artists and protect our rights. While it will take a few months to roll out, it's an interesting move to ensure that your creativity remains authentic and protected.
Instagram tip // Improve your reach! Struggling with low views on your art Reels? No problem, I’ve got your back! In this carousel, I'll walk you through step by step on one way to tackle this issue.
This is good news for me! I hate complicated things or situations. So simplicity is the weapon I can use to improve myself. I also had this bad habit of wanting to try everything at the same time and in the end, I didn't improve in any area. 2024 objective: make considerable progress! (finger crossed)
